There are only maybe 10-15% of people in any religion that actually give a fuck and act on the teachings of their religion.
The rest are just people going with the status quo, following along with what their religious leaders say and trying not to get caught when they give in to temptation and violate their religious principles.
The vast majority of Muslims will drink, do drugs, have sex out of wedlock, etc. I had some Saudi neighbors in college and some of these kids had never been in the same room with a woman who was not a family member before they came to the US. Once here though, the temptation was too great.
Being away from that 10-15% of zealots who hold them to their religious principles, they were too weak willed to not just asimilate and follow the path of least resistance. Drinking, sex, drugs etc all became known to them eventually and they enjoyed it and loved it. When they go back home they will pretend none of that stuff ever happened and go with the 10-15%.
But what happens when the 10-15% come? Well they become more radical and more extreme in their beliefs. Seeing the decay of their fellow Muslims breeds hatred and disgust for the West and it's corrupting influences. This is how you get Omar Mateen.
It's also how you get those Christians who shoot up abortion clinics
