Ask him what he means by supporting Marx. Does he mean he agrees with Das Kapital? Fair enough, Das Kapital is a brilliant book with fantastic insights into 19th century Capitalism.
Does he mean that he agrees with Marxism as a sociological school of thought, that due to the plundering of labour from the proletariat, the same class will eventually rise up against the bourgeoisie? Well it's happened a few times, so there is some evidence to suggest that it's a fair sociological model.
Or does he mean that he supports the rise of the a global revolution against the ruling classes, and the birth of a perpetual global revolution? Then ask him, after you've achieved global revolution, what next? Where will your society move to with all your enemies defeated? Will you enforce laws or not? Will you draw lines between people due to languages, culture and tribalism? Will you have taxes, a welfare state, restrictions on what can be produced and what cannot?

Why do people think Marx was an economist? He never developed any kind of economic theory, all he did was critique capitalism. Marxist economics came later, and was a complete failure as shown by the economic and political failure in the former Soviet bloc.
I'd bet all my money that the person who shared that has never taken a course on Economics in college, let alone read any kind of book containing actual economic theory.

Logic in what way? Logically Communism's inevitable outcome is the reduction of mans creativity and therefore his ability to persevere. It reduces the man to a material conception rather than something beyond and certainly above.
Most hardened Marxists will actually concede to this point. They proudly flaunt that they are "materialists" and therefore they completely support the notion that man is merely a means to an ideological end rather than anything meaningful. Everyone who I've met that actually thinks Communism is a good idea usually have no clue what Communism is and what Marx believed.
They're usually taken aback when I tell them that Marx believed certain groups of people had to be exterminated, and rightfully so, so that Communism can form, and that the citizenry should be armed.
But I guess it's no secret that most Communists are just liberals that think Communism is some utopia fairyland where everyone is nice and gets a "living wage".

Masters Econ student here,
Read a moderate amount of Marx either on my own or through school and his economic logic is entirely insane.
Consider, he believed that value of goods is derived from the amount of labour value imputed into the good... his entire economic theory is based on this assumption. Once you deviate from the fact that some good can have labour work on them yet be considered valueless while some can have little labour and be considered extremely valuable... you start to understand why a Labour theory of value is not accepted by the entirety of the mainstream and most heterodox economic theories either.
The only thing useful that Marx showed was there existed power between economic agents in a nearly free market system and that this CAN but does not necessarily mean that there exists the potential for exploitation. Really he was a glorified political philosopher, definitely not a good economist. I suppose one could even say he was a sociologist more than anything.
