I've had thoughts about this issue before, I do believe there is a problem. Our amount of new posters is constant and appears to be ever increasing and I agree with OP that this is an issue. Education is paramount in discovering and distributing the truth, and it has become significantly harder than even the last election cycle in the US to accomplish this due to the fog of the media and their ties to government, corporation and their respected narratives. However what I appear to see is that the media has had a greater exposure to the normal individual in the last few years in part because of technology becoming closer to us but mostly thanks to the ongoing development of social media. Couple this with human laziness and you can see how many think things that are simply untrue and thus become 'useful idiots'. I'd say it is still slowly on the decline with regards to its power and will never return to a full monopoly/oligopoly of different biases infighting that only represent controlled opposition and that is because all people have a platform now if they seek it. We can speed up the rate of which the mainstream media has its decline by pointing out inconsistencies and examples of bias whilst supporting alternative media and thus decentralizing information. More importantly one could spread the notion of being most critical of ones own beliefs, this has a powerful effect if believed and sets an individual on a course of locating the absolute truth. Many of us do this autonomously but there are also many people who are new users and those outside of this place that have no concept of this. Not only do we vote with our money but we vote with our beliefs and where we get them from. This is why truth has the most importance. And the truth has, these days become illusive and difficult to locate, this is why we are relevant and why the world needs us.

I studied history at university, which is very particular about knowing the origins and biases in a source, so I tend to do additional research outside what /pol/ says, and actually try to follow and check links.

There are many different agendas, so you can't tell who's doing it in all cases. Usually the threads appealing to the lowest common denominator, the ones that push purely emotional buttons using obvious mischaracterization or falsehood, or smears, insults, themes that are obviously unpopular in the target environment, etc. You can't always know why, sometimes you can. Many here are so conditioned to help this process along, they think it's being edgy and do it without having an agenda, like having /b/ on /pol/. In many cases, just polluting the board with an overwhelming amount of crap works for an agenda, by driving down the level of discussion or crowding out "dangerous" topics.

I've worked in online opinion management and marketing before, and the clientele and interests that pay for this are highly diverse, from academic research to simple marketers. For example, that last "what does /pol/ think of X youtuber?" thread you saw, you probabl assumed was just some nerd trying to gauge what is considered cool here. Perhaps you thought it was someone with a youtube channel cleverly bringing his product up. In my experience, it could have easily been anyone from a simple slide post to someone paid to gain "user impression" evidence beyond linkthru data that /pol/ is actually a good platform for marketing youtube content producers. It might also have been someone testing (over the span of weeks or months) to see what the typical political character of the board is, which has changed dramatically since 2009. Often, these baramoeter style posts are regular and repetitive, meant to accumulate data over long periods of time.
Yet the average user assumes the poster is someone resembling how they see themselves, and will engage with the thread on that assumption.
