I learned to swim when I was fairly young because I live next to a river and my family often had parties on the bank. I remember what it was like not knowing, all of the adults would get frustrated that I couldn't float because they had been doing it for 30 years and didn't have to think about it. It legitimately took a lot of experimentation to figure out that you're basically alternating all of your limbs to push you upward instead of just mindlessly thrashing around like everyone was basically telling me to do.
