Back in the 80s and for the bulk of the 90s you didn't have this shit. I'm 41 years old and I've watched the narrative coming out of the media change. Anyone under the age of about 26 has hardly known anything other than this George Soros anti-America propaganda and it has taken its toll.

Bad health stats come from a huge influx of South and Central Americans who grew up with no health care (including no dentists). They get here and they're a mess.
Crime and poverty are made worse by left-wing policies that reward people so long as they do not get upwardly mobile. The black stay poor because it's easier than crossing that threshold where the government money stops and life gets harder.
Crime is also exasperated by immigrants causing culture clashes at the street level. It's easy to cut crime in a homogeneous nation (also why homogeneous states like Vermont are so low crime).
We spend more per student than most countries but, again, you have the permanent poverty blacks and the immigrant Latinos dragging down statistics.
We're actually still the greatest country in the world, provided you do not find yourself under the heel of the Democratic party.

1. It's ethnocentrism. America is no longer white communities, and the predominant white communities have lost their culture and ethnicity. Prior to WW1 German Americans, Italian Americans, etc. were all aware of their ethnicity and even used their mother tongue in publications. I think you'd be surprised how many people still join the military out of patriotism. Lots of them come from rural areas which are still solid red.
When I got out in 2000 it seemed like it was still the usual mix of joiners: some patriots, some who just thought it was a way to start a career and some who had fucked up their lives enough that a military enlistment was the last good way to try and get their lives on track.
Patriotism was never a majority of it, but I would be surprised if it has noticeably gone down.

I'm 23, my dad's 47 (*turning 48 in a few weeks*), and his father died at the age of 96 almost 2 years ago. Between the 3 of us, we have a variety of political views but what we used to have in common is all 3 of us being Democrats. My grandfather was a WW2 veteran and fought under the leadership of FDR and Truman, so he was more of an old school 20th century democrat. My dad was the last of the their 11 children born and he was born in 1968 so I'm sure by the time he was of voting age he was probably influenced by figures such as Jimmy Carter, Al Gore and Bill Clinton. All throughout my childhood and teen years I politically identified as democrat until for some reason when I was 18 or 19 I drifted more towards the right wing. Then as time went on race became an even more important issue to me and so not only am I more free market and anti-tax then most of my democrat family, I've also got a bright stripe of white nationalism in my political views. Hell, I've even gone as far some days as to say that we fought on the wrong side of WW2 and that we helped the good guys lose.I have a cousin who's become more right wing as well and the situation with his parents is even worse as they follow the demoshit party blindly and they even went as far as to try and keep him form getting registered because they know he's voting for Trump. I'm more or less a millenial (b. 1996), and up until last year, I used to really hate American pride.
I learned to interpret history differently than when I was in school. Instead of just reading events, I try to envision myself as the people I'm reading about. After reading Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, I got a true sense of what America should be.
I wouldn't call myself patriotic. I think present America is a shadow of its former self, it has become everything the founding fathers tried to avoid. We've gained an insane amount of power, at the cost of an insane amount of corruption.
I'm not unpatriotic because I'm not proud of my country, I am unpatriotic because I think my country has lost its way, and there isn't much I can do about it , except tailor myself and my actions to be what I think society should be. I can sew the seeds of change, pass this on to my children, and hopefully they can do the same to theirs.
