The way I see it, if you look at social media toplists and start to do the math, it really is quite a low number of people that make what I'd call "a living."
A lot of the top channels are institutional, for one thing. But when it comes to the PewDiePies and the Boogies out there, there just aren't that many -- CAN'T be that many.
The middle of the bell curve (if it even is one) would be your camwhore type people. They can make maybe $1000 a month, but only during good months, and obviously that is not enough to really make a career out of, much less a retirement.
