This is true but it should be pointed out there are three "basic" designs for planes ( and a few other specialist ones).
The normal aircraft, takes off from a conventional runway, cheapest to build and maintain and also has the largest payload and fuel reserve.
The VTOL and STOVL, can take off and land vertically, obviously can also take of conventionally and in the stovls case can use the jump jets to reduce runway needed instead of full vertical take off. Has the smallest payload, costs the most and smallest fuel reserve, also more expensive to maintain but has awesome advantages for marine support and small carrier sizes if used for navy.
Carrier variety, only France and USA use them, is fitted with wires and reinforced hull to take the force of catapults and wire landings. Medium payload, fuel and price.
It should be noted when saying small medium and large were talking 10/10, 8/10 and 7/10, i.e not huge numbers of difference
