I think the root of it is that they actually feel guilty for living in a successful society. These vocal leftists tend to be very successful people (either through their own work or through daddy's inherited money, which is why so many of them went to ivy league schools).
They COULD make themselves feel better by donating money, volunteering and fixing the world's problems but:
a) that would be hard work and
b) deep down, they really don't want to lose or give away their own money
So self-hate, projected as hate against their country, is a way for them to feel less guilty. You don't have to feel bad about being successful if you convince yourself that you're not, without actually changing anything. "I'm not rich and happy in an amazing country! America sucks! We were never great!"
Leftists really do have a lot of mental problems to work through.
