I once had a Lebanese professor who spoke English with a heavy Arab accent. In the month after my exam he somehow managed to get American citizenship and land a job as an assisten professor in Phoenix. By chance, the 4th of July was in the week after that and he invited the chair to come celebrate "his national holiday".

No. We have the re-unification day when flags are hung, but nobody celebrates. And we have New Year's Eve with drunk people and fireworks and a lot of overworked FD and ambulance staff that have to take care of that combination. In some areas the fire department even drives around on patrols that night. Not kidding, I've seen them patrolling the streets, looking for the first fire or the first victims.
