I think the weather is too good in Queensland. People can just shuffle around in thongs and a singlet with stubbie in hand. There isn't enough motivation to make things cool, stylish, contemporary, cosmopolitan or anything like that. Most of the world's creativity happens in climates that are a little challenging. It's one of the most successful examples of multiculturalism you'll find. As best I can tell, it's agricultural runoff (that reduces oxygen in the water), overfishing (that changes zooplankton levels, that also affects oxygen), dredging for shipping (that creates silt and contamination), and rising water temps (caused by larger global factors). But I'm no expert. It just seems to be that denial isn't a great stance to take towards the reef. Scientists who are studying it are documenting that something bad is happening on a large scale. There's no reason to doubt there people. They're mostly just other Australians who were lucky enough to get plenty of uni education and who also care a lot about the place.

I grew up in isolated rural NSW and know what it's like to feel that the city people are just fucking everything up for you.
