Life was going pretty good for me. I was involved in heavy combat my first deployment, then transferred to a POG unit where I was deployed for the second time at KAF. It was gravy, I only went outside of the wire a couple times a week. Towards the end of that deployment, nightmares started, then flashbacks, then panic attacks. For the longest time I tried to hide my military service, not because I was necessarily ashamed of what I did, but I was ashamed of what I'd come to represent.
But then, I listened to the people thanking me. They weren't really thanking ME, they were thanking the uniform, the military, the country. They wanted so badly to believe in an America that stood for justice and honor and righteousness. They didn't really care about me, the individual Soldier. To them, I was a flesh and blood symbol standing right in front of them of what America could be. Something pure and honorable. So I started thanking them. "We couldn't have done it without your support." and "Thank you for your faith" and "Thank you for standing by us."
You should see how they beam from ear to ear. It's validation that America means something.
Real vets don't want anything, save for maybe an occasional bit of acknowledgement that they suffered for a reason. Barring that, some free pussy would be nice.
