I saw a woman walking her dogs on a downtown street. A car hit one of the dogs and sped off. Because their leases were tied together, the other dog was killed as well.

Life begins, but whether or not it's meaningful life is another story. Sure, eventually it will become a baby, but while in the womb it isn't one, at least until mid to late third trimester.
It's alive in the same way an amoeba is alive. All a fetus or embryo does is basic functions that it's programmed to do. It doesn't feel, it doesn't know it's alive, and it certainly doesn't care if it lives or not.
