The whole concept of an underground bunker would be better if there was a way you could dig deep enough and remove enough dirt to put a bigger underground bunker and have about an acre of land underground. Basically moving a residential house fortified the same way as the other underground bunkers and have a yard and some room to grow stuff with artificial lights making the scenario less depressing looking.
But that's pure fantasy as is surviving in an underground bunker.

Better option is to live in a rural area far away from government centers, military bases or large cities. Bunkers are not defensible. Only as long as the oxygen lasts or the air duct remains undiscovered. Remote land is better, remote land with a nice 12 foot fence covered in razor wire and a solar powered red snapper electric fence is better. Camouflage it with thorny ass bushes and you have a nice hidden compound thats horribly hard to get in or find. Bonus points it keep the animals out so you can garden.

The only way an underground bunker of larger size would be viable in the long term is with a constant power source. The only one in the world I know of is Cheyenne mountain. They have basically a miniature city inside and they tapped an underwater river to power most of the facility with hydro power.

A better idea, drill a well at the base of the bunker before construction and install a hand pump. Stockpile a variety of foods. Is mylar bags and oxygen absorbers for long term 30+ food storage. Better yet, just dont live in an area thats going to be targeted and get some plastic and duct tape and seal up the house for a few weeks. Install a section of duct work on the wall and put some air filters on it. Fallout is carried on dust and particles. No dust and particles, no radiation.

Look, I'm pro-bunker, but unless it's secret it's undefendable. Which means in the context you are talking about it's not "a defensive position". Once someone knows where it is there are a hundred ways to get you and just throw explosives down at you. Even if you have really good doors you still need air, you cant do anything to stop them and they have all the time in the world to look for your air intake. After that your fucked. They don't even really need to do that, unless your doors/hatches are 100% waterproof they can just burn you out with one can of gas and a match.
I think a bunker that is fool proof would require millions to keep it sustainable long term.
