they got conquered, defeated, humiliated. their entire way of life is now backwards and obsolete.
not assimilating them all into american culture was a great mistake. now they are doomed to linger on in perpetual limbo, in a state of permanent defeat and humiliation that will never end, with no perspective of ever rising up.
