Empathy cannot explain why something is wrong or right. Empathy could by a method of how we know morality. For your example, empathy doesn't explain why keeping a guy with cancer alive in the long run is bad. In your moral framework, you have the underlying principle that suffering is bad, so keeping him alive is bad. You rationalized your way (thought not objectively) that suffering is bad. This is completely unrelated to empathy.
