Well the bolt locks back and won't slide forward unless you press the bolt release or pull the charging handle back a bit more and let it go.
So after you're out, you drop your mag, put a fresh one in and press your bolt release.
Bolt flies forward and bam you're ready to remove kebab and commies again

Depends on the design. I think you can load a seperate round in the Beretta pictured here because it has an open-top slide. I've fired one, but I just loaded the first round by racking the slide. If you're firing multiple mags and count your shots you can switch your mag when it's empty but you still have one champered, then you can keep firing without manipulating the slide or any controls besides the mag release.

This is correct, if the Beretta pictured is the same I fired (92FS).. The lever more towards the muzzle is used to take the gun apart IIRC.

Older AKs have this. Most modern rifles lock back on empty and have a bolt release.

The "bolt-hold-open" also is useful to quickly inspect the action/chamber. With some ARs it's also easier to load a full mag with the bold held back.
