I had a local guy who would take in High Schoolers at 16-18. He'd train them (or have one of the older boys train them), pay them hourly at $8 with raises if they stayed on throughout HS.
Learned all about the trade from him and the older guys. Got paid nicely, got to learn responsibility and other values, bettered me physically, improved my math related skills.

I call bullshit. I did ZERO EC programs or activities in high school, no sports community service none of that stupid bullshit, went to community college for 2 years, graduated with a 3.2 GPA and got accepted to VCU. Stopped going after one semester and got accepted to ODU without even writing a letter to them.
BTW I'm a upper middle class white male so its supposed to be hard for me to get into colleges
