Is 26 too old to start university?
>>
>>79544317
No.
>>
>>79544317
I've seen 50 year old students. Its never too late to get a degree if it leads to a good job.
>>
>>79544317
Not at all
>>
If you're still alive the answer is no

I've had grandparents in my courses
>>
>>79544317
If you're 26 and don't have a college degree, you might as well just commit suicide.
>>
>>79544317
My dad went to medical school in his 40s
>>
>>79544317
Only if you are pursuing a bachelor’s in english or some social science. It's never too late to get a STEM degree.
>>
>>79544317
nope

just make sure what you're studying is worth it.

just sit back and laugh at all the naive 19 year olds in your class voicing their sweet little opinions in your humanities electives
>>
>>79544317
Nah, been in classes with 40 - 50 year olds. Don't fall for the "I missed the boat" meme, never too late to unfuck your shit.

t. English major saddened that my field has been overtaken by leftists and in the process of seeking a career change
>>
>>79544678
Based dad
>>
>>79544317
Take a major with a future like A STEM or a trade such as welding.

Graduate.

Make bank.

Bang the 18 and 19 year olds while you're there.

No, but be prepared to feel old. University is an extension of high school where everyone can enter nowadays
>>
Real talk, it's never too late to go to college.

Unlike high school, there is no age limit.
>>
>>79544317
No it isn't. I went back at 26 myself and it was way better - I actually worked instead of drinking and socialising.
>>
>>79544317
No, in fact you have an advantage over all those teenyboppers
You actually know why the fuck you are there so you'll actually try to get good grades and go for a major that isn't shit.
>>
What's the point of a degree anyway?
>>
>>79544317

I only hung out with the people who were 25 or older while i was studying accounting. They had a lot of advice for me and were a better preperation for the real world post-college. You will be fine OP and you will have a lot of friends.
>>
>>79544317
No, don't listen to these cunts on here who tell you yes.

They will discourage anyone who has any aspirations or ambitions, so they can feel comfortable being lazy NEET cunts.
>>
>>79544862

You need one to get a decent job in this country.
>>
>>79544317

NO. I'm 27, CIS major. Every single class there are SEVERAL 40-60 year old people.

It's never too late. As long as you aren't an idiot.

Don't listen to anybody else here bro. NEVER TOO LATE.
>>
>>79544317
no anon son, but make sure you pick a career with a future rather then falling for the educational jew before taken loans.
>>
>>79544317
Not as long as you do a good degree.
I'm 27 and doing my final year starting September.
>>

no, but dont bother starting it without learning everything on the internet.

the internet is 1000000000x with 99999999999999999999999999x more resource than college has.

learn everything then breeze through college afterwards and get your degree cheap.

OP here, I was thinking of studying computer science. It seems like humanity is on the cusp of a new industrial revolution with computers and automation, I want to prepare myself for the future

I've already started reading the /g/ meme book and learning Java to prepare
>>
>>79544317
You need to be realistic. At 26 you should be looking at a retirement home to move into
>>
>>79544317
Yes, unfortunately. You are far, far, far too old at 26. Realistically, you should just kill yourself.

No, of course it's not too old. Stop looking for reasons to be afraid, doubt yourself, etc. Go and follow your dreams, work hard, and you'll make it. Stupid question in the first place. You're young as fuck at 26.
>>

>>

No way dude, I'm 22 and I haven't even finished all of my general education classes because fuck college. Going to military/medical school instead.

If you don't know what degree you want to get, just research the degrees that will give you the widest amount of opportunities and $$$. Keep in mind that if you make a certain amount of legitimate/non-degenerate $$$, it doesn't matter what you're doing to get it.
>>
>>79544712

>implying going to college isn't already fucking your shit.

Unless it's a hard science or healthcare you're better off learning on your own time with any number of free resources.

>>
>>79544317
Are you a fucking idiot? Of course not, just don't waste your time or money if you're doing so. If you plan on skipping classes, not honestly trying to do and learn from the work and planning for the future, then obviously don't bother and let some other sap go. It is what you make of the opportunities available at the start.
>>
>>79544317
Nah mate, sure most of the students are around 20 yo but at the end of the day there's a lot of people who are 40+ in the classrooms. There's nothing weird about it, you just don't really expect to see them in parties. Imo if you hate your job you should not be okay with wasting your life on it, just give it a shot for one or two semesters.

takes medical specialists like 17 years of university.
your dad becomes a doctor, just in time to retire.
>>
I dropped out of high school my freshman year.

Worked menial, low-wage jobs until I was 29.

Tested for the GED, enrolled in a community college and received my AA at 30.

Enrolled at a state university at 31 and was awarded my B.A. at 33.

Currently 36 and working in the IT field earning 60k annually. I've got about half of my college debt paid off, with about 30k remaining. Due spending all of my childhood, and nearly all of my adult life, living in poverty, I'm able to live well beneath my means and expect to be debt free within 4 years.

I'd almost certainly be earning >$10 an hour had I not sorted out my life and went back to school.

I'm in my mid-thirties and browsing 4chan, though, so I guess I'm still a failure.

Depends on how far you're willing to go and what end goal you have in mind. At the start I wanted to stay in and get a doctorate but, around 2015, I noticed that the leftists more or less took over uni and constantly pushed their agenda, so I grew disillusioned.

Regardless, from what I've read about the Ph.D path it sounds like I'd be better off doing something else. Tenure is a bitch.

I'm an idiot who got a degree in criminal justice. I wanted to be a cop, but then I got a real job after I graduated and realized that money and comfortable hours are more important to me.

Now I'm 23 and making absolute shit pay working an office job where I can't advance because everyone else has actual degrees. I'm wondering if I should go back and get a real degree.

It's just hard because I have a gf that I live with and its going to be really hard to have to go back to depending on my parents and not being able to pay for anything anymore.

Nope. up to 40 is fine.

Also, you wont be a clueless 18 year old (assuming you had a life so far) and will get all the girls because 18-22 year olds cant compete with 26 in terms of life experience and desirability, as people that age tend to have their shit together.

I graduated from uni at 28 because reasons.

>>
>>79545149
Yeah do that, I'm 27 and taking Accounting with the intention of getting licensed as a CPA. As long as you're pursueing something that has a high potential earnings it's not a waste of time. But you're old enough and mature enough that if you wish to educate yourself in Liberal Arts going to a university would be an inefficient way to spend your time right now, you would be better of spending your waking hours working.
>>
>>79544317
No, but remember you are going to learn and develop your skills. Watch the drinking, drugs, and smoking whatevs. Read the chapters, at least try to comprehend them once over. Go to class. Major in something that is hiring, growing, and paying decent because at 26 you obviously didn't grow up wishing to be something.
>>
>>79544317
No way. I know tons of older people who go to university, and I mean people like over the age of 36. As long as you are bettering yourself, can afford it, and getting out of where you are, go for it
>>
>>79544317
No, I went back at 28. It's hard to get in the door of jobs afterwards but it is possible, you can do it. I am making lots more money now than i would have if I had of stayed a pleb. Do a useful degree. Or start your own business if you have an interest/passion

Get 2 or 3 of those up there, and you got yourself a portfolio and a credibility indicator. Plus, it'll give you confidence for the technical interviews.

Life should be seen as a continual process of self improvement whether physically, intellectually, emotionally, or simply gaining a new skill.

That said you will feel old as fuck - but speaking from experience those twenty one year old college girls will throw themselves as you if you are reasonably attractive/fit/dont live in a fucking dorm. Feels goodman

There's no point going.

You'll end up in minimum wage work even with a "valuable" STEM degree.

>>
>>79544317

It isn't if you are a technician. If not, you should take a technical degree because it gives you far more preparation in a shorter ammount of time for the job market. Im talking about STEM.

Thats the weakness of taking a masters degree in a scientific field: way too much theory and diversified fields of study and almost no preparation for a job. You would be waisting your time.

They're telling you to join the military because at 26 and not in college, it looks like you're going nowhere in life and dumb people can have decent paying jobs in the military and begin an actual career. Nigga, lisp is fantastic as a 1st language, it actually feels like a chore switching to C/C++ after learning it, it would be actually a downgrade if not for the execution speed and control advantage.

Dude, it's 2016. Noone want to install goddam programs on their computers, which are used less and less everyday.

Web (PHP, CSS, HTML, SQL, Javascript, Ruby)/mobile (android/swift) are the way to go.

The rest of languages are outclassed and the little jobs offered are for people who have been working for 10/20 years on them, not for newfags.

Ohhh, you guys are talking about mobile development and other stuff that aren't resource dependent.

If you want to actually program anything that runs well use C/C++. In mechanical engineering if you want to write a program that does any type of finite element analysis java and python aren't going to cut it. If you want to make video games that run well (see minecraft as an example of one that does NOT run well because of java), you use C/C++.

Why does C based language get so much hate? It's not unbearably complicated, and it's very powerful.

PHP is still widely used by a majority of websites out there and will still be for at least a few years. Same goes for Java. It used to be the big thing, and a lot of applications are still running thanks to it.
You are almost sure you get a job in the short run by sticking to those, but you should also look after emerging platforms like Node.js once you are advanced enough, as they might take over a significant share of the market in the future.
Sticking to one language shouldn't be the way to go anyway, as each can be complementary.
>>
>>79548244
This is half truth. Large scale enterprise development, API development etc. are all done with either Java or C#.

Hipsters, startups usually start off with one of the meme languages (Python, Node) then suddenly they have to hire actual programmers and rewrite everything in Java because it just cant take more than a million requests or continous development and versioning etc.

Your best bet in this industry is either learn Java/C# for enterprise development and for mobile, or learn C++ if you're interested in game development or stuff like quant trading etc.

Web development is nice for single moms and students but its super fucking full of morons now. Would not recomment.

Alright OP, here's the advice you need to listen to. I'll take some time out of my busy day of shitposting to give a honest response. I've seen others in situations like yours so I'll be as helpful as I can.

A bit about me for context:
>19 y/o CS junior
>currently interning with a F50 company
>in the process of starting my own business
>lots of personal projects outside of the classroom
>have been a volunteer tutor and TA for CS students

>>79545149
Do CS. CS is a field where age/lack of formal experience can be forgiven IF you have enough side projects and can prove you're competent.

Java is a great starting language. I wouldn't suggest learning python first as >>79545468
said. Python is easier to learn, but consequently you'll end up taking a lot of programming constructs for granted, which I don't think is a good thing.

Don't even think about learning PHP first as this guy said >>79545873
He's either shitposting or has autism.

To start off learning Java basics, if you haven't already, check out some youtube videos like thenewboston:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl-zzrqQoSE

Start off doing small projects. You won't retain much if you just watch videos. Eventually you'll want to make a Github account and put your projects there to start building a portfolio. Once you get the hang of Java, I'd consider doing some web development. It's an easy way to show people something you've done, and you can make money on the side from it pretty easily.

Look at this to begin with: (google coupons for these courses, don't pay full price)
https://www.udemy.com/complete-web-developer-course/#/

Once you have web development basics down, I'd suggest you focus on React, MongoDB, Node and Express. Knowing these will allow you to make more complex projects.
https://www.udemy.com/learn-and-understand-reactjs/
https://www.udemy.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-nodejs-express/

Start university and study CS. If you actively work on non-school projects, you will find a job.

Because it's a combination of about 50 people left who actually know how to make c++ programs effectively, programming becoming chic and hipsters being given certs for programming after a year of classes in class structure and googling ebin APIs to do everything for them so they don't know what goes into it

People who talk shit about c/c++ wouldn't know how to program a simple microcontroller.

Depends on the university/curriculum. Virtually all CS programs will start you out with just programming. After an intro class or two, you'll probably take a class on data structures (a little bit of theory) and discrete math (a lot of theory). You can't assume your classes will teach you everything you need to know about coding, which is why personal projects are so important.
>>
>>79546227
Seeing as how java is based on C with some simplifications it is an easier and better language to start with, if anything learn Java then C is a better route for entry programmers which is why so many universities do just that

When you're first starting out CS and everything is new to you there is no such thing as "too complicated", If anything, starting out in c/c++ makes everything else seem easier.
>>
>>79549349
The american version is mostly just about the computer part, and very little engineering.

Should be math, physics, electronics, digital electronics, microelectronics first.

At this point you should be familiar with how modern and historic computers worked, whats the "science" behind them and should be able to model a problem with mathematical tools, use functional analysis and general math to create a simple algorhitm etc.

After this you should learn assembly to actually see how a computer really works after all the fancy abstraction of higher level languages go away. This includes memory management and adresses, writing to outputs and reading from inputs etc. Could include some FPGA programming because that shit is pretty interesting.

Then after all this you should learn C, then learn data structures, common algorhitms and all the rest. At the end of the line you should learn how professionals actually work by learning team management, code management, versioning, security issues, testing and so on.

All in all it should equally be engineering, science and even some humanities in it.

You can be Jonny the web dev without all this but starting off with all this it's gonna make life much easier and to get into places like Google (if thats what you want) would be impossible without this knowledge and framework you know and use.
