Back when the CA AWB was first passed it had a lot of republican support because all the politicians back then were older great generation types, ie ones that used rifle grip guns in ww2 and considered pistol grip guns to be "gangster guns". My grandpa threw away his NRA membership when they came out against the CA AWB. All 20 of his guns have rifle grips.
Also: the main backer of the CA AWB was Strum Ruger corp. The only company in the US that, at the time, made "compliant" rifles (Mini-14s and Mini-30s). Same for the CA handgun roster (which over half the models still in production are Rugers).
The whole "rifle grip" AR thing didn't become a thing until about a decade ago when the fed AWB hit it's sunset provision (ie, it was only law for 10 years after it was signed).

They're trying to ban that rifle outright so they're chipping away at features to make it difficult and specialty to make it conform.
It's stupid though the only reason why that rifle had a pistol grip is because the bolt carrier has to travel back into the rifle's stock so it can't have that traditional ergonomic rifle curve.
It's not any more controllable than a traditional rifle.
