The common misconception today is that dignity is acquired by individuals. It is not the case. It has never been the case. Dignity (which is intrinsecly related to wisdom) is inherited, not acquired randomly. Appearances are acquired and lost randomly, but dignity (and wisdom) are inherited from a tradition.
Now, we are the Kali Yuga, so the "original" tradition of this age is already of pretty poor quality, but rejecting it to start something "new" is not more worthy, it's actually just the degradation of an already weak tradition.
But rejoice guys, soon the earth will get rid of the majority of humanity, and a new, better tradition will arise. It will be our duty, in our next lives, to live up to that tradition and seek enlightenement instead of pleasure. (not that we can't do that in this life, but it will be easier then).
