Russian math education is fucking hard, compared to western. On a western university, they try to be gentle on the students, so that they won't scare them away and the university gets enough money. In Russia (especially in the Soviet Union) they didn't care about mediocre students; if someone couldn't handle the raw shit, then he wasn't fit for mathematics.
