anonymity is a double-edged sword
On one hand, all of us have the complete (more-or-less) ability to say whatever we want with no societal or moral consequence outside of our own desires and personal restrictions.
On the other hand, there is no way of telling who is presenting what idea or information, making the gathering susceptible and entirely vulnerable to outside subversion from the very groups the gathering criticizes.
It's basically a nameless democracy, like voting with voter ID. At least we have in-thread IDs to determine which poster is saying what, but we cannot ever be entirely certain of the poster's biases and motivations unless we know them (and not every poster will provide a name and valid timestamp).
There doesn't seem to be a solution to me, but I'm welcome to hear anyone else's ideas.

Personally I see technology and "the wave of the future" to be technically inevitable, but moderation is the key. Both website moderation (as in dedicated mods) and personal moderation (not spending too much time absorbing internet info in place of activities that actually benefit you as a person).
I learned all about conspiracy, history, and philosophy on the internet, and none of it from public school. Everything I learned in public school that wasn't mathematics or science was challenged by information, and I almost can't believe how much of a good goy I was in high school. The internet is a useful tool, but we cannot let it be used against us.

I agree completely, social media has proven to be a huge waste of everyone's time and intellect. However, there is a certain value in career networking on the internet, but it should be limited to resumes and such, not trivial social aspects.

Yes, in THIS generation. The issue is the next generation, which will be given all of the wonders of the internet we loved with all of the restrictions we allowed it to have. Our kids (or at least, the next generation of people) will grow up entirely used to the censorship, just as they learn how great it is in their common CORE classes.
Meeting in real life has its problems, because the state can still use its own superior resources to track people down. Imagine fearing that every meeting is a sting operation to capture anyone who would dare criticize authority in any way.
