For a modern example, people say we spend too much on the military industrial complex, but ignore the fact that they're literally the closest to developing microfusion and would probably save millions of lives by doing so.

That's true. I remember the Dems were complaining there were too many reasons given for going into Iraq (which they then voted for). The "weapons of mass destruction" reason was one of the top reasons for going, and eve n Al Gore argued that was the main reason we would need to attack Iraq. (This was when he was still Vice President. Bill Clinton (and every intelligence agency in the world) also believed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
Also, at the time, Saddam was playing games with the US. He would ignore deadlines over and over until went told him "last chance" then he would give in just before that deadline. Later he said he never thought the US would attack, because he had deals with the French (in violation of the food for oil program), and the French were promising to veto any use of force resolutions in the UN. (We found out about this from captured Iraq documents).
The reality of what was going on is very different than what most people are being told. Nobody ever talks about what was actually going on day to day during those times, and only talks about weapons of mass destruction.
BTW, 9/11 was never given as justification for the second Iraq war.

Morality extends from humans being a social species. Morality is essentially the rules we agree upon (which does not necessarily equate to law), the entire reason they exist is because caring about other people's welfare is an evolutionary positive for a social species.
