It's a nice thing to say, but it's also completely untrue. Life is not like a video game where everyone has the same number of skill points to allocate. Our strengths and weaknesses do not balance out. Some people are good at everything, some people are good at nothing. Some people are much better equip for success. As long as our society operates according to this idea, there will always be struggles.

What makes it so dangerous is that if you tell people that they're equal and they're not stacking up, they're going to find something else to blame for it. I'm not just talking about a race thing. People who are dumb, ugly, short, ect are more predisposed to crime and anger.
I think that Conflict Theory makes sense, but not for the reasons Marx thinks. The conflict comes from innate differences among us contrasted against the idea that we're all equally capable, not exclusively socioeconomic factors.

"Created equal" refers to moral equality, not physical, mental, talents, etc. Nobody has ever thought that people are the same. The idea is that the differences don't determine what sort of treatment you get under the law, or what respect you're owed, etc.

When clearly there's limits to this, and society was much better off when it had set niches for every level. I think you're misunderstanding my point. The idea of maintaining the notion of equality is dangerous when people can't reconcile their differences in potential.
There's no reason why it would be "degenerate" to have a place like this where people opinions can be exchanged on an even playing field. In fact, the marketplace of ideas is one place where equality is important. The quality of the person speaking shouldn't make their ideas more or less valid. Stupid people can be right and smart people can be wrong.

Giving up on self-improvement is the most degenerate thing you can possibly do. Just because you can't be perfect doesn't mean you should stop trying to better yourself.
