Here's the short version.
Venezuela is one of the largest oil producing countries on Earth. With the enormous windfall produced by that oil industry, a country like, say, Norway, would Nationalize part of the industry and use the money to build infrastructure, invest in businesses, and supply some safety to its people in the form of welfare, subsidized education, etc.
Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez did not do this. Instead he fostered the enormous monoculture economy and blew the rest of the money on gibs. Moreover the markets remained entirely unfree, so there was very little private-sector development of businesses and other industries, since everyone could just mooch indefinitely off the oilbux.
Then along came a spider, a new form of oil production called Fracking. Fearing the rise of this industry Saudi Arabia did what it normally never does, and flooded the oil market with cheap crude, smashing oil prices. Simultaneously Barack Hussein Obama kneecapped the American coal industry, handing enormous market share to American oil manufacturers. These factors contributed to a crash in oil prices to pre-2001 levels, and the result was that Venezuela's economy essentially halved in yield overnight.
Without any economy, infrastructure, education or free enterprise in place, Venezuela had no way to cope with this collapse, they had one trick and had been milking it for all it was worth for decades, but now that oil is worth less than water, they're fucked.
Maduro is also a total retard and didn't see this coming, so they took no meaningful steps to prevent it. The result is essentially the same as those Appalachian mining towns that literally only existed to dig up coal, but are now totally impoverished because the market dried up.
