Muslims continue to emigrate en masse into Europe and eventually the US. They have lots of children who grow up devoted Muslims. Christian and other religious groups breeding rates don't even compete. So now, many generations down the line, we have a majority Islamic US and EU, with access to the technologies developed previously by the now minority inhabitants. We eventually figure out cheap enough ways of mining the asteroid belt.
