The reason L is smarter than Light is because he almost beat Light 3 times using nothing but his intellect, while Light was only able to kill L because he had:

3. A girl with the same notebook and a death god, who worships him

These live action remakes aren't targetted towards the original fans at all. They've been planning these live action shows based off anime properties for a while. They want to capture a global audience whilst using the popularity of anime. This is why popular or well known anime are getting adapted.

He could have gone to university and become a detective almost on par with L, living a good life and catching the worst kinds of criminals according to a legal system without which the world would crumble. Can't Hollywood come up with more of its own shit? Copying anime, cartoons, and vidya is just failure waiting to happen. You can't have both a movie that showcases a star character, is very accurate to the source material, and pleases the fans. There's a reason why so many of these recent cartoon, anime, and vidya movies are either mediocre or failures, like TMNT, Tomb Raider, Dragon Ball Evolution, King of Fighters Movie, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li- and the list goes on and on- the list goes into the future with Naruto the live action movie, a Tetris movie, and Akira.
There are plenty of writing who want their stuff on TV and movies, but they get passed over for vidya and anime crap.
Breaking Bad's story is pretty similar to Death Note's story. Except that its much better, much more clever, and much more relate able. I don't even like Death Note because its an anime about people being mean to each other.

Not until many episodes later. He confronted Light in order to assess his character. Even if L did just inherently like Light, he was still trying to expose him, so the friendship prior to the conviction would have just been a bonus.
