2: His style of talk. Ted Cruz had the impression of a preacher, to which middle ground voters maybe turned off by

Donald Trump was a huge ball of Charisma, although Ted Cruz has the same ability it is to the lesser degree as Trump, Ted Cruz could not tap into the anger of the average Tea Party voter as well as Republican voter. After which Trump shifted his political campaign to attack Cruz at his weakness which was "Cruz is tied to Goldman Sachs" and that was the final nail in the coffin for Cruz' 2016 run.
Over all Cruz is probably not done in the political arena and if Trump flubs 2016 he has even more ammo for 2020. We will see what happens at the end of this election year to fully see where he goes.
