They've tried hard to keep their traditions but numbering only 4000 or so that's been difficult. The last native speakers passed away in the 90s unfortunately. Although street and shop signs remain in French and the tricolour flies all over the area alongside the NZ flag. Its a beautiful touristic parts of the country, I suggest you check out Akaroa on google maps to see what the southern most French town in the world looks like.
Also some kiwis harbour resentment towards France. Mitterrand ordered the only terrorist attack on NZ soil back in 1985. We expect that shit from Afghanistan or Libya, never an allie like France.
