There is no question the present version of the EU is a political monster and you better crash it with no survivors.
Union among European nations is, however, definitely needed. Despite being rich, at the end of the day you are a bunch of minuscule countries caught at the crossroads of the world, everyone is coming out to get you, and you cannot be depending on US defense forever as that country is a degenerate monster itself.
Wish the EU existed as a free trade and defense treaty among European countries, not an attempt at United States of Europe (or Union of European Socialist Republics to be more accurate).
Freedom of movement was also a good idea provided that outer borders of outer nations were heavily controlled, and poor nations like Bulgaria and Romania were not allowed in just to spite Russia.
But alas, what the EU turned out to be has probably ruined the concept of a close-knit alliance between European countries for everybody.

There's nothing wrong with many European regulations, the Union has done a lot to protect our health, our safety, social security, the environment and our civil rights and liberties. A lot of which has been completely ignored outside EU just to protect the corporate interest and profit instead of social progress.
Now what governments shouldn't do is bailout banks and corporations, the fact that we have corporations and banks that are too big to fail means that governments have failed to regulate them properly. We tried to fix this in the European union through The Liikanen report and banking reform proposals but they were watered down by member states like Germany and the UK.

You can't unify Europe. The Romans couldn't, Carolus Magnus couldn't, the Habsburg couldn't, Napoleon couldn't, Hitler couldn't and the Soviets couldn't.
And you know what? I love it! We are a diverse continent.
Should we cooperate on matters like defense and scientific projects and have free trade deals? Of course.
