There were legitimate attempts to make things better in some places, but the basis of the whole thing was basically dominating a weaker entity or establishing entities to fill gaps. Africa wasn't going anywhere. With thousands of years with no progress, it may or may not have been moral, but it was honestly the right thing to do for Europeans. We can't really know one way or the other if it was moral or not without time travel and some serious research.
It's not like Europeans directly damaged Africa, those slaves were already slaves. The only way you could argue that European ownership of slaves was harmful to Africa as a whole would be to say that taking their slaves out of African circulation stole Africa's workforce, but by that point you could also argue that slavery is a good thing and that banning slavery was directly harmful to the USA.
