The Soviet government had printed thousands of Russian - German phrasebooks.
At the start of the 1939 invasion of Poland Germany had 2,000 paratroopers.
In 1941 the USSR had 1,000,000 trained paratroopers.
You don't use paratroopers to defend.
Soviet tanks in 1941 were all designed to be amphibious. Amphibious tanks can cross rivers without a bridge. When you are defending territory however you blow up bridges you don't cross rivers that have had bridges blown up.
in 1941 Russia was moving massive amounts of cannon fodder troops from siberia and its prisons to the polish frontier.
In 1941 Russia had all of its airfields on the polish border garrisoned. When you plan on offense you move your planes close to the border so they can penetrate far into the enemies territory. When you are defending however you keep your plans far from the border so they can't be captured.
The German offensive was so successful initially because the Russians were preparing for a massive offensive. Their troops on the front were bullshit, the airplanes were instantly captured and not able to be used, the tanks were designed for crossing rivers which was a useless waste of material, and the army was being organized by Zhukov for an offensive.
