I'm joining the Canadian armed forces soon(30 days) as a Communicator researcher. I have no family or friends in the military and have no idea what I'm getting into. Any advice? Wat do military anons?
>>
>>79183712
LOL good luck the government don't treat veterans well unlike in America. They don't give them compensation after serving and dying for the country.
>>
>>79183712
Why throw your life away for the army?

Lots of jobs pay shit, if you want discipline just start lifting, at least then you won't have to be stationed in Bumfuck Nowhere Ontario and waste years of your life.
>>
>>79183712
Been in the army for 3 years in the combat arms. It's fun and you will make friends quick it's forced onto you
>>
Get a green card.

>>
guys is it worth joining the CAF? I've been thinking of joining after I'm done high school.
>>
>>79183712
If you still have a chance to back out you should do that. Canadian soldiers get no respect abroad or at home.
>>
>>79183886
>>79184021
Communicator Researcher is not much of a combat trade. So I wont be dying in combat.
>>
>>79183932
>>79184243
Im not going to back out.
Im at least going to do the 4 years of my initial contract.
>>
You'll find the military is a very disorganized place and you'll deal with a lot of Bullshit but 10/10 best job ever
>>
>>79183712

You fucked up. You should have opted to specialize being a Memetic Warfare specialist. What a lost opportunity shitposting, weed meme, shilling and thread sliding.

Anyways the big green machine sends you were they need you even if it means on the front lines just remember that.

Yeah, I at least understand that.

I'm currently like 6 months into my application process. I did great on my CFATs and have been accepted for an interview but my local recruitment center is fucked with how long it takes to get a hold of them

>answering machine is full
>email is only read once every 72 hours
>recruiters turn you away if you haven't waited the the two weeks between steps of the application process

It took me 5 months just to get in to write my CFATs because they had to keep rescheduling me.
>>
>>79183712
Do your best to be the grey man through training, it'll make life easier.

If you're a single man living on camp, save up and buy a property, then rent it out, by the time you're ready to leave the forces, a big chunk of your mortgage will have been paid for you by some civvie scrubs.
>>
>>79183712
Lucky for you Canada doesn't have a real army, it will be like a 4 year cosplay.

Their soldiers have a better international rep that your mob do, they can restrain themselves from panicking on contact and accidentally brassing up other NATO forces.

Distinguished themselves in WW1 and WW2 as well, including managing to take their assigned beach on D-Day without turning it into a circus like Omaha.
>>
>>79185615
Bringing up the whole D-Day thing is a bad idea. The beach we attacked "Juno" was very very lightly defended. We basically landed on the beach, walked up to a house and said "you've been liberated".
While the Americans on the other hand took the heaviest defended beach.
Bad example.
The world war one stuff is on point tho.
>>
Military people are the best. Just join in the banter with others, and don't be too sensitive or too much of an asshole. By the time you're fully trained, you'll be mates with all the other guys you're with, it's what the military want.
>>
I've thought about joining in the past. Seemly decent pay it would seem for potentially interesting work.

Anyways, I'm 24 and have literally no one I can use for a reference (4 people known for 5 years). What do?
>>
joined once before and got told to do more stuff to make my application look better

this is the second time and im just waiting for the email.

kinda worried cause my recruiter told me you only get 3 chances to apply, if you get turned down everytime you wont be able to apply again.
>>
>>79186182
The references part is completely fucking stupid.
I'm 21 and worked since I graduated high school in a set of few decent paying jobs(40k a year factory work) ranging from 1 year to 2 years yet they won't accept any supervisors I've had as reference because of the 5 year rule but they also won't accept non authority references so it's not a reference based on security. Yet they won't accept a reference from someone I worked 50 hours a week for but they'll accept a reference from a fucking hockey coach who coached me for 10 hours a week for like 8 months simply because he knew me for a single year over 5 years ago.

My entire school went through a staff restructuring due to a school board strike and will not give me the info of any teachers so they're not an option.
>>
>>79186182
I was sort of in the same situation as you with few trustable references.
I used high school and collage teachers as non family or friend references you only need 4 of those. And then 4 family for friends references.
If you can't come up with that, maybe talk to the recruiter about it, see what strings they can pull.
>>
>>79183712
Basic training is super gay, especially if you do it at the Mega (13 floored Comblock that resides in a shitty part of Quebec).

Your 1.1 training might be alright, depending on which branch you head to. Try to be as fit as you can prior to joining, it makes things much easier.

Afterwards, things will be alright. You also get to bitch and moan about everything because there's tons of dumb shit going on.
>>
>>79183712
Comms Research aka "rubber heads" is pretty cool desu. You're obviously trustworthy, as you'll be eavesdropping on some pretty serious shit.

>>
>>79183712
Do you get payed in training?

How much do you expect to make and what is the salary outlook like?
>>
>>79186795
OP here.
I do 30 push-ups every other day and go for a jog every other day.
Is this rigorous enough to be able to handle basic or no?
>>
>>79187031
During my first interview I was told you get paid starting in basic.Average salary depends on if you're spec or not but it's all available on the government website, if you trust that.
>>
>>79187031
On the enrolment offer paper that they emailed me it says ill make $2836 Canadian a month starting the day I arrive in Quebec.
>>
>>79187129
pay looks like fucking shit but if they are paying for your residence and food and education I guess that makes it more palatable.
>>
>>79183712
Tough training and peopel being assholes to you. That's about it. Develop a thick skin and you'll be justfine. Also, BRING EAR PLUGS. Someone always snores and it'll drive you crazy during the night. If they put you in Quebec, realize that by the time winter comes around, it'll be frigid. That's about it.
>>
>>79187368
residence depends on if you're married, location etc but you can get a 1 bedroom apartment for like 82 bucks a month. At least that's what I was told by the 5 or 6 guys I talked to before my interview. My interviewer said the same thing but considering you get full benefits and essentially paid schooling if its a trade, it doesn't seem like a bad deal. My buddy went in as a Mat Tec and got enough training to take his welding cert 4 years later for civilian work.

Now is the worst time to join the army you'll just end up as a pawn.

Got a few people that MIGHT work, might. If they are still alive otherwise I'll just have to contact a recruiter and hope for the best it seems.

NATO is about to send 4 battalions to Eastern Europe. I've read that the one planned to be stationed in Latvia will be majority Canadian.
Get ready to get deployed to one of the comfiest and one of the last remaining white countries in the world.
>>
>>79187880
Funny enough. When I first applied for a while back. I applied for infantry and armoured soldier. But because I ware glasses and my non corrected eye sight is too poor they would not accept me for those roles. So I went back to uni. Only to drop out after a year and a half. I wanted to reapply. This time for the recruiter told me about Communicator Researcher and said it would be good for me based on my schooling and my CFAT scores and this time got accepted.
>>
>>79188486
that's my plan. I got 1 reference that I worked with but knew prior to getting hired there. I'm just waiting on the callback period to end so I can give them a ring and get things straightened out.

I'm probably fucked but at least I got a boilermaker apprenticeship and some illustration work on the side lined up if they can't help me.

Also for anyone who gets decent grades in highschool, or already has a university degree(as well as isn't a total autist) ask about entering as an officer. ROTP will cover your university tuition to a civilian university, or grant you entry into the Royal Military College. I would recommend joining the reserves beforehand in order to recieve full private pay when you enroll instead of OCdt pay(which comes down to $500 dollars a month after rations and quarters are taken off). The recruiting officer might try to talk you out of joining the reserves. Don't listen to him. If you are going though the ROTP program joining the reserves beforehand will net you tens of thousands of dollars in pay over your 4 year schooling.

pretty average. Get you're pushups to 4, and run 5km in 20-25min.

Do some lifting too and anything they throw at you PT wise will be EZ.

Being able to function without much sleep and not stressing out over things is also a bonus.

We don't care. The only thing we care about is doing well, and making sure we do our best, and that has been proven time and time again.

>the heaviest defended beach.

Sword beach was the most heavily defended actually. Taken with lower than predicted casualties.

Omaha should have been easy, it's defences weren't insurmontable and it was far away from significant German reinforcements, in fact the British and Canadian beach-heads all encountered German counter-attacks before Omaha.

Omaha turned into a bloodbath because the yanks were too proud to use engineering tanks because they didn't design them themselves and because they fucked up their landings because their naval/army c&c was shit.

>>79189128
Omaha was a fuck up plain and simple, you had vastly overwhelming numbers, naval artillery, absolute air superiority. It's relative strength versus some of the smaller beaches is irrelevent. US forces should have taken that beach with minimal casualties, just like the other Allied beaches, two of them more heavily defended than Omaha, were taken.

It turned into a farce because your commanders fucked up and your troops weren't properly trained on the specialist equipment required, and you very nearly got thrown back into the sea because of it.

By comparison, a smaller Canadian force took a smaller beach, with below-prediction casualties, because they did the job properly.

Your huge contribution to the final four months of a four year war, against a demoralised, starving and unsupplied Germany is duely noted.

As for heroically selling us and the Russians war materials during WW2 so we could engage the bulk of the Japanese and German land forces, respectively, is greatly appreciated.

PTE S01, reg force NCM. I think it was around 2800 with taxes deducted. When I got to Wainwright, we were making 900 and change per paycheck during dp1. Now that I'm in Edmonton at my infantry battalion I am also getting a LDA(land duty allowance) of $300. And I'm on S02 now so I have a small pay bump. I live I'm the shacks and I'm off rations. My room costs $99/month deducted from pay, until private 3 pay in which case it will go up to $300/month. Once I'm back from europe next year it will be time to move out because fuck paying 300 for the shacks, dealing with MPs(watch out for those fuckers) etc. When you move out you get $700(I think) in an additional living allowance. That allowance is subject to the living costs of the area you are stationed in, as it's the DND's way of adjusting pay for living costs of an area. Once you get to corporal pay, it gets much better, and it's a guaranteed promotion.

Anyway man, don't expect much in the way of money, you're aren't joining for that. If you are, you're fucking up.
>>
>>79183712
