/pol/ was much more center right, Libertarian and thought the far right was stupid. Now, /pol/ has gone further right, embracing nationalism. Now even though I personally agree more with 2012 /pol/ than current year /pol/, I'm curious as to why that is.

I don't think /pol/ has veered further right, it was always largely nationalist. Of course, "right wing" is not very useful of a scale to be measured on. Economically speaking, for example, Libertarianism would be more to the "right" than national socialism. Of course Libertarians were a little more hyped around here when Ron Paul was running though but that's to be expected.
I do think, however, that the real world has seen a new nationalist "right wing" rising quickly. The liberal/cuckservative mainstream (globalists, if you will) pushed too far into the other direction, they were clearly on top and ran everything unchallenged (media, politics, they controlled every narrative and their opposite) but they did too much too fast and got a rise out of people that they didn't imagine would be possible anymore. It's dangerous to mock and scorn a formidable opponent while they're down.
