Not sure if I'm inclined to believe it the book was written in 1967 in the peak of the civil rights era. And by a descendant of the slave.

But there wasn't really any afrocentric we wuz everything movement back then. Maybe he did or didn't or maybe the role of the slave just got more exaggerated with every generation. I can't really tell for sure. I think, though, most likely he did have some contribution maybe some altercation to it or something like that.
