Post WWII, we were the manufacturing center of the world. Europe had to rebuild, as did Japan and Korea. London was bombed out, so NYC, and by extension the whole of the US, became the financial hub too. Women didn't work either, so the workforce was halved.

This made for a perfect postwar boom. Everyone could get jobs out of high school because there was so much demand. Corporations and unions could work together easily because happy workers will make more goods to sell domestically and abroad.

That ain't the case now and it won't work because we don't have the tax base necessary to prop it up.

This trend was seen in the 1970s, and unfortunately at this point, the baby boomers reached adult age. Also remember that a high population of students as well raises the cost of tuition do to simple lack of seats in a classroom.

I remember Peter Theil talking about this, said the rate of innovation is going down in our world, people are inventing less and less so there is no economic growth and that is what has lead to stagnation in wages which government creating inflation in all other areas.
