Hard to explain. It is rather subtle.
When I came to Australia I was literally amazed at how people do so many things over the phone.
Also... ITALIANS HATE VOICE MAIL.
Here in Australia nobody sends texts... but they always voicemail you. So you have to pic up your phone, call voicemail, listen, etc...
Now I am used to it... but it took a while to get used to it.
So once you are in Italy, if you want to put pressure on people, you always have to call. Now that I know the trick it works like magic. It's like having the upper hand on negotiations.
This might not be 100% general... but I met more than one Italian who is "allergic" to phone calls.
