I recently did a deep research on my family tree. Took me almost two years.
Turns out I have a Serbian 3 x grand father and a Greek 5 x grand father, like 200 years ago he came to Bulgaria and married here.

Ultimately you will have to pay some for certain documents, but it's peanuts.
1. Talk to as many old as fuck relatives as you can. Write down all names and family connections.
2. Trace as far back as you can.
3. Once you have the list go to the municipality where those people lived and dig into the archives (pay or bribe if you have to). There's an insane amount of info stored in old archives.
4. Shit becomes tough when the trail goes to other countries.
For example, I found evidence of my Greek relative in a municipality along the current border where he stayed for awhile (at the time our border was down to the sea near Ohrid, so he felt safe deep in Bulgarian territory). I don't know where he came from exactly opr his birthplace, no way to find that out from here, but the he had a Greek name and the documents said he had come from Greece to seek refuge from the t*rks.

well, my ancestry is from northern Greece, in lands Greece obtained 100 years ago, from the Ottoman Empire. How much would that complicate things?

To be honest, no they aren't. In Greece, most of them are ugly or fat, and they can't dress for shit.
