Why is it that University is a system where people can freely choose what to learn and devote their lives towards but school is not?
If it's a question of age and lack of experience, then wouldn't it make more sense to teach children about different careers rather than the subjects which are used in those careers? For example, why would a child care about learning maths when what they really want to do is be a programmer but they have no idea that programming involves maths and only a certain type of maths?
You have some choice of what subjects you want to learn later in high school but 30 minutes a day 3 days a week is not enough time to do or learn anything, especially when you are absorbing 5 other lessons with 5 different subjects that same day. Nobody wants to be forced to learn. Forcing someone to learn against their will will only serve to undermine their enthusiasm.
Only certain people decide to do maths at University, why would those people want to learn English or do PE? There is absolutely no connection between those three different subjects. Learning advanced maths or english in high school is not going to benefit your decision to be a carpenter. You learn maths a lot more effectively when you're using it in a practical application when you're doing a trade as opposed to learning the theory in a classroom. The ability to multiply and get figures in your head without a calculator is not taught in school which is a skill that many tradespeople need and they pick it up on the job.
