All goes back to Greece's bailout. Back when that was all the rage, Greece also had to deal with some 200k illegal immigrants that it couldn't handle on its own. Greece was fortunately never left alone. It has ~52k immigrants right now. It had more in 2010. As a Greek living and working in the centre of Athens I can tell you that when Merkel opened its borders every Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Libyan, Algerian, Kurd just went to Germany for these sweet benefits.
