If I'm using a date to tell someone about an event, it means it's far away. When I say what month it's going to occur, it's meant to bring up a calendar in your head of that month. That's the most important piece of information, so it comes first.

YYYY-MM-DD (with leading zeroes, naturally) is the only way to go. Otherwise, the native lexical sorting order for entities that include dates in their names are fucked up and hard to work with.

That's the only date system I've used all my life. In particular, it's the only one that works well & consistently with computers, programming, databases, etc. Also, STEMfag here. Been using this system and metric all my life, but am "bilingual" so to speak in American, Canadian and UK systems.

Fuck the metric system in its ear, though. I understand it and can use it just fine, but base-10 is so fucking annoying. For practical use, I really like being able to divide by three and six without getting a non-terminating decimal result.

admittedly it just means we're too lazy to rearrange the context we see, but I do think there's something to be said for it. Everyone knows the year, that's not useful for context, every month has at least 28 of the same days, that's less useful, there's only 12 months and they're all distinct, very good for giving context.
