I cannot speak for Britain, but Americans only learn about Germany through the World Wars. We learn about Nazi's and Hitler's rise to power, and his party's use of propaganda to convince everyone that Jews were vermin. Then we learn about battles and the Holocaust. We're fed the whole "this was the worst thing to ever happen to mankind" story, and then we stop hearing about Germany after it's split into West and East.
Honestly in our classrooms, we only hear the name Germany mentioned in a few key events (immigration in the 1800's/Berlin wall falling/etc) and then move on to what America did.
So Americans grow up only knowing Germans as Nazis unless we individually take the time to read a few books.
I knew a German exchange student in college who was planked by his suite mates (they put mein kampf in his bed as a joke) and it turns out that wasn't so funny. But really, Americans only learn about other countries if they emigrated here or fought with/against us in a war.
And most students don't give a shit and only remember information that caught their attention.

Also, contrary to popular belief, germany doesnt give money to peripherical countries out of charity (and neither does this money come from the germans themselves). It gives loans with money acquired in asia which in turn are paid with interest while said countries are literally forbidden of producing something for themselves (thats how big the germ cancer is).
Anyway, it will be all over sooner or later.
