Finasteride is a good start. But there a few other drugs that you could add on your regime to totally recover of your receding hairline/baldness.
Look up Spironolactone. You combine that with finasteride and I will be surprised if you keep losing hair. I think Spironolactone essentially nukes your system of androgens so you don't lose hair anymore and your follicles recover.

Just get a trimmer, put a length comb on and trim it. Too short and it doesn't look good unless your head is perfect (I happen to have a very good head shape for short hair, thankfully). You can use that for your beard/moustashe as well.

There is a difference with taking care of yourself versus getting a cosmetic procedure done. Not saying one is better than the other, but hair transplants generally work well but you can always see that the hair is still somewhat thin looking.
