Last time Ohio was won by the republicans was in 2004, McCain lost it by 5%, and Romney by less. It's an industrial center that's been hit hard by the effects of NAFTA and low increase in wages.
McCain lost Pennsylvania by 10%, and Romney never set foot in the state and called it "unwinnable" and lost by 5%. Right now it's tied between Hillary and Trump, as part of Hillary/Obama's "war on coal" and Hillary's infamous "we're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business" line.
Virginia's been a losing stronghold of the GOP, their governor and both senators are democrats, and this is mainly because of changing demographics in minorities. It's winnable, but it's been a staple of the "Obama states".
You're right about North Carolina though. It's pretty even right now, but McCain lost it in 08, and Romney got it back in '12. Not impossible for them to go blue, but not a guarantee either.
