There seems to be a misconception in the Christian world about the nature of reforming a religion. While the Lutheran movement is often seen as a modernization, also forcing the Catholic church to become more "modern" it was actually only re-reading the religious text getting back to the original message. "Modern" interpretations of Islam are not like post reformation Christians, they are more similar to 1300AD Catholics, fairly far away from the literal meaning of large parts of the scripture. Islam, getting back to the basic content of the texts looks very different form Christianity, the Muslim equivalent of the Lutheran reformation has already happened, the result was Wahhabism and Salafism.

Islam came close to gaining the intellectual framework necessary to build an advanced civilization, as was CLEARLY displayed during their Golden Age. If they had continued along that path, they would likely have had their own Renaissance long before Europe did, and things could have been much different.
Unfortunately for the Islamic world, they did NOT continue to develop what they acquired from Greek literature. Religion trumped out intellectualism and they fell into decay, and so lost out.
Hell, they even had another chance to embrace intellectualism in the recent Arab Spring... but that failed also. It is heartbreaking, because we know that they have the ability to become a great people, but religious dogma just keeps chaining them to the ground.
I think one of the main reasons for this difference between the East and West (in the far past) is that the greed of secular rulers in the West overcame religious zealotry. Secular rulers desired to have more power than the church, and, over great periods of time, were actually successful in acquiring said power. This allowed secular interests to flourish over religious ones, and thus intellectualism began to blossom, bringing us things like the Italian Renaissance. Unfortunately for the Islamic world, their rulers were always inextricably bound to their faith, so no separated between the church and state ever really developed. Even today, the states are STILL theocracies.
Human greed can be a bowl of shit, but an idiot is anyone who denies that it has been useful in bringing about modernity.
