Eh, no. The Northern Ireland jurisdiction was gerrymandered into existence in 1920 after unionists were disatisfied with what the rest of Ireland wanted. In that region many people of Gaelic Irish and Scottish planter descent live, but it's not like Northern Ireland was ever some historically separate area to Ireland before that. The closest thing was a kind of "Ulster loyalism" (but then the majority of Ulster itself wanted independence). The boundaries were drawn as a means of creating a majority unionist area while maximising land gain (so it includes huge swarthes of majorly nationalist land too). At the time many of them did not even consider themselves as "not Irish", they just didn't like the way the other Irish were going.
It's like everything in the circle being let secede from England and remain in the EU, except at least the City of London was a thing before this. I know they're trying to do it, but I think we can in good faith agree they shouldn't.
