It isn't. Against multiple attackers it is quite effective, because you can simultaneously suppress and attack the enemy through volume of fire, whereas normally, 2 or 3 vs. 1 is a death sentence if they know what they're doing.
Just like the katana shit (where they used to be the greatest swords ever made, glorious nippon steel, etc., only to become utter garbage using shit steel, can't stand up to Euro swords, only useful for killing unarmored peasants, and so forth), progun opion of automatics has swung the other way as well in response to attacks on gun rights. There's no reason to go to extremes; auto and semiauto fire each have their benefits, and each excel at specific applications. Neither are "shit", you have to use the right tool for the job.

Converting a lot of weapons to full auto isn't outside the realm to even the average person. The tooling would be the biggest hassle part and the most expensive. Large organized crime avoids uses guns as much as possible because it racks up the prison sentence and if you don't need it don't bother.
Terrorists on the other hand usually lack the resources to make it worth while. You can spend your money to get a rifle, ammo, mags and then either -
A( Buy the tooling required to convert a rifle to only be slowly more effective.
B( Have someone else do it for you risking the whole plan not happening because you get ratted on and lets face Muslims sure as hell don't have white friends who will make the parts for them.
C( Use the extra money to build a couple of make shift bombs that will kill a lot of people.

Guess you'd better tell every military on the fucking planet that they're wrong. An LMG is very easily controllable in automatic fire unless you have pencil arms. Automatic rifles less so, but auto is more of an afterthought than a design focus.
