>No moves are likely to be made in haste, however. Relocating investment banking operations and people is costly and complex. And London still boasts many advantages — language, the legal system and the talent pool have long been a boon to the City, as well as more intangible draws such as housing, schools, restaurants and cultural delights. Many top traders will be asking themselves: do I really want to live in Frankfurt or Dublin?

the media has been horrible since the vote

they've presented the petition uncritically as a big deal, even though it's easy to see that it's demonstrably been rigged (thousands of votes from the vatican city, among other places)

they've interviewed a handful of people who claim to have voted leave and regret their vote, and used that to create a narrative of "leavers regret their vote", based on a handful of anecdotes and ignoring polling which suggests most leavers are happy with the outcome

to reinforce that narrative they have jumped on the fact that "what is the EU" was the most-googled phrase in the UK after the vote, and created a narrative that people didn't know what they were voting for, even though there's no way to tell the people googling that question voted in the first place

then they've gone back and found any suspicious claims by the leave campaign (but NOT done the same with the remain campaign) and used it to try and claim that the vote was based on false premises, even if it means taking those claims out of context (like pretending the "£350 million to the NHS" thing was a promise, instead of an illustration of what we could do with the money)

they are trying their absolute hardest to present this decision as illegitimate and people are eating it up. there's no chance they would have done the same if remain had won.

Pretty decent article from Hitchens, it's clear that he's had time to write it rather than his rushed Referendum Day/Sunday blogs

>If we try to break it off now, we will not emerge back into the world as pure and unspotted, or as secure, let alone as powerful and important, as we were when we began. Those who wanted to get out (and I am one of them) are going to have to accept that independence will not mean a return to the lost days of Imperial London, but will probably mean acceptance that England (with tiny Wales at her side) is on her own again for the first time in more than four hundred years.

Any person allowed to vote, is allowed to vote. Young people can vote as well and in case of Brexit, only 3 in 10 young people voted to remain, 1 in 10 voted to leave and 6 out of 10 dont care. "The old people screw over the young people, as long as young people let them"

Currency is back to february levels, it is stabilising and the FTSE100 is doing better than other european stock exchanges

Every country has invaded other countries and every country has dark pages. Colonization ended almost three generations ago, you can see some former colonies in Asia doing really well, some former colonies in Africa doing really bad. It's no longer up to the west to rule those countries so its not up to the west to pick up their shit.

I wasn't around for the first vote, so can't comment on that. And a bit fussy memory of second vote as I hadn't reached voting age by then.

But I think both referendums was more of a we want to stay a country. Fear of loosing or having to give away fishing rights to EU trawlers (we had enough problems with Russians stealing fish). Then there is a strong farmer "movement" that don't want someone far away to rule them.

Then we have the history of beeing under Denmark, then given as a birthday-present to Sweden (if I recall correctly) and almost fought a war with Sweden for our independence. So our history also plays a role as we want to stay a country.

The position of the capital also probably comes into play as it is placed on the fringe of Norway so it is far away from everywhere else in Norway. So the thought of moving power further away gives a sour taste in the mouth.

But after Norway said no the first time the politicians said OK we will respect that, and then they signed Norway up for EEA without asking. In the beginning I think it was an OK deal, but then again the EU was better back then also. No open-border crap as it is now (except the Nordic countries had free movement between them at that time).

But to end this (hopefully rational post) the statement that it was a clear no vote was perhaps a bit overstated.

1972: 53,5 no votes
1994: 52,2 no votes

There’s a famous wartime cartoon by David Low, drawn after we were thrown off the Continent in 1940, of a British soldier shaking his fist at wind and waves from a sea-girt rock and proclaiming, “Very well, alone.”

“This is the war we always knew, … / When no allies are left, no help to count upon from alien hands, / No waverers remain to woo, no more advice to listen to, / And only England stands.”

The trouble is that these days, only just above half of us feel this way. The rest are happier with the other, more comfortable, less thrilling path of the EU. Will we now finish the job we have started? I have my doubts. We are in the curious position of having chosen a policy by popular vote, while still being saddled with a government that disagrees with it. There are several ways out of this conundrum, and some of them may well involve new compromises which seem unlikely in this ecstatic moment, but which may come about, all the same.

The 5th biggest economy in the world and a net importer wants quick trade deals. The EU will be bitter and stubborn, but every other country will see the money and jump on this.

>Old people shoudlnt be allowed to vote or they screw over the younger generation.

Turn out in 18-24s was only 36%, they screwed themselves over. If they'd voted in the sames percentages as the old we'd have voted remain.

he's an old fashioned politician, we can just send him thousands of letters via snail mail or catch him on the streets.

Actual genuine engagement has gone down, not up, with the social media era, most twitter accs are run by campaign staff.

Precisely. They don't give a shit about the democractic process whatsoever.

This is being displayed no better than in Nicola Sturgeon, who is now complaining about "trapped Scots" despite the fact that there were thousands of Scots who also voted to Leave. Leaving alone the fact that if Remain won, there would be thousands of "trapped" people that Sturgeon wouldn't give a fuck about.

Times like this just bring out ridiculous emotions out of people. Particularly on 4chan, /k/ is being surprisingly vindictive, currently.

>"hey UK buddy dude. Want help taking Hong Kong from the red devils? All we ask for is a military base there. We got a deal bro?"

Well it's clearly on a downward trend.

For it to lose 4000 points in the space of a couple of days would constitute a crash greater than even the 2008 recession.

Things aren't catastrophic (yet) but that doesn't mean there's any cause for celebration.

Just so you know, Johore was never under true British rule like the rest of the weaker states, but we were the only one to accept their methods without having half the population shot.

There cannot be a "solution" when we're of two fundamentally different positions

I'm a conservative and you're a Thatcherite, since all that matters to you is money it makes sense to keep open borders, your position is logically sound for someone without any sense of morality or tradition
