I've been there, they're very kind and are famous for their hospitability. The only thing that sucks, are the religious police, which drives by, if you aren't clothed accordingly (short pants etc.) Isfahan, Shiraz, Tehran, Kerman etc. are wonderful cities. That's impossible advice for someone who like to do touristic things outside of the big cities and is going to the mountains/remote locations.
Best way to not get mugged is to have situational awareness at all times. And to not look rich if you're actually going out on the streets outside of your car.
ie. if you're doing a market visit, leave your rolex at the hotel, or in your pocket.
I've traveled with over 1k$ on me alone for weeks. Never been mugged.
Other good tips is to split the money and stash it in different points on your person. Never get money from the 'hidden' places in public, If you hand over about 50$ most muggers would just be happy to take it and go.
Carry printed copies of your passport and hand these over to the police (or someone convincingly pretending to be police) when they ask for a passport. claim you left the original at your hotel.
That way corrupt cops or pretenders can't demand money to give you the passport back.
Depending on the country, especially so in central Asia, do not trust the police, do not follow them anywhere that does not look like an official police station and threaten to call your embassy on the spot if things get fishy (and do so if needed, but that usually won't be needed).

Iran seems to me to be a very nice place with good people and a strong work ethic. Lots of Iranians are formally educated and there's a burgeoning field of tech companies and startups there.
However, its been marred by stupid politics on both the US and Iranian side. If they could slowly morph their government into a more parliamentarian one, they could get a lot more done. Thankfully, this seems to be what's happening, with people who are openly for such changes being elected, as least as far to my limited knowledge of internal Iranian politics.

I am Iranian, I've posted in these threads many times. Here are my thoughts.
On immigration: an immigrant should not be able to vote, hold office, have more than one child, or be able to smuggle their whole family overseas. It is a sad sight that most immigrants are leeches, instead of pledging allegiance to the nation that took them in with open arms.
On allegiance: I pledge my allegiance to the Canadian flag (Islamic Iranian flag is gay as hell, anyways. Bring back the lion) because I live in Canada, but my cultural allegiance will always be tied with Iranian heritage; therefore, I can never truly be a real Canadian because I lack the blood bond with the native population. This is true of all immigrants and it is something to be ashamed of. You are not with your own people. I admit that my actions are cowardly because I cannot visit my homeland because I will be captured for my faith (I denounce Islam any chance I get because they are vermin who brainwashed my kinsmen).
On identity: Iranians are not white, we are Iranian. All I have to say about this is that our skin is relative to our position near the equator; I am white-passing, Mediterranean-esque skin colour. We aren't white because that isn't our heritage (more than just skin), but we are distant cousins (Indo-Europeans).
Any Iranians who are half-breed should be physically removed from this planet, you are a disgrace to everything, unanimously hated by all. If you live in a Western nation and do not respect white power, you should be removed immediately.
