The reason major armies have lost control over the Middle East is guerrilla warfare. The taliban used these tactics solely.
They hid in plain site, behind civilians, and behind government.
The American army has always been using the "hearts and minds" tactics. They didn't kill civilians and never directly fired unless fired on. Partially the same when the Russians came in during the 80's
They would start a small ambush and firefight, then drop their weapons and walk back into the villages. Same with IEDs, you can plant them and watch from afar.
Guerrilla warfare has always worked. Especially when you don't know who the enemies are. It plays a major psychological role against invaders.
Invading the Middle East would never be a good tactical advantage. Picking sides with fighting factions causes more issues than warranted.
Overall it would never really work without shock and awe'ing them all. Killing civilians and children in the process. The IDF has used this method and it has worked, but not without international communities moaning and bitching that a few civilians had died.
Now a country vs. country with real functional armies is a whole different question.
I've done 3 tours in Afghanistan to know that it was a shithole that wasn't meant for us to be there.
